Copy of email sent to County Clerk (WITH A RESPONSE BACK) and a few thoughts on the matter
Dear County Clerk Ertmer :
Are you planning on having the Appleton City Clerk present at the board meeting on June 14, as you told me last Friday, to talk about the kind touch screen system they use in the city of Appleton.
Also do you know if there are local or area representatives for all the different systems that can be used- and how to contact them?
You indicated to me in a follow up email that while Diebold own the company that provide the voting machines we have now they are not the company that made the machines. Which does discredit the point - " We should use their machines currently and for that reason we can rely on them again. Same owner but a different maker.
MIKE NORTON
--------------------I do believe representatives from all systems that can be used should be present. Currently we cannot use Vote Pad because that can only be used on paper ballots. We can get a waiver from the SEB but they do not meet until middle of July.
I also think this meeting should have been earlier to give more time to act if the board does not approve of the grant as it is presented. Kevin Kennedy from the SEB is going to be there and he should be asked some questions concerning Diebold and possibly seeing if Winnebago County can get a waiver for set period of time to find a better system.
EMAIL RESPONSE BACK FROM COUNTY CLERK SUE ERTMER :
I've asked the Outagamie County Clerk, who uses three different systems, including the one the City of Appleton uses, to come to the Board meeting.Cindi Hesse has also been made aware of the meeting and is invited to attendand speak if she chooses. As far as contacting the other vendors, I sent an e-mail to ES & S throughtheir website asking for price information, but have not heard back fromthem. I'll attach a link to the State Election Board's website, where youcan find links to all the voting machine vendors, none of which are local.Command Central is in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and ES & S is out of Omaha,Nebraska. http://elections.state.wi.us/category.asp?linkcatid=618<http://elections.state.wi.us/category.asp?linkcatid=618&linkid=159&locid=47> &linkid=159&locid=47 Diebold is the only company that services and programs our currentAccuVotes, which were manufactured in the mid 1990's. Since that time,Diebold has taken over the manufacturing and programming of all the AccuVoteunits, so I don't think it discredits my previous statements. The vote on the resolution was Ayes: 17 - Weber, Barker, Ramos, Pollnow,Anderson, Thompson, Lohry, Hall, Wingren, Norton, Warnke, Robl, Schmuhl,Kline, Locke, Eisen and Schaidler. Nays: 19.
