County board reduction crowds election

With the deadline for nomination papers quickly approaching, the effect of the Wood County Board reduction is starting to be seen.
In 2006, voters decided to cut the size of the Wood County Board in half, from 38 to 19 supervisors. The spring election will be the first affected by the reduction.
When the Wood County Census Review and Redistricting Committee created the new districts, it chose to combine two current districts to form each new district, placing two incumbent supervisors in each new district.
This year's deadline for filing nomination papers is 5 p.m. Wednesday. However, if an incumbent did not file paperwork with his or her intentions by Dec. 21, the deadline will be extended three business days -- to 5 p.m. on Jan. 7, Wood County Clerk Cindy Cepress said.
Seven incumbent supervisors have filed declarations of noncandidacy, including Donald Melville of Wisconsin Rapids, Lavern Reigel of Marshfield and Dennis Schulhauser of Marshfield. They have a combined 40 years on the board.
A variety of reasons have prompted some supervisors not to run for re-election, current Wood County Board Chairman Lance Pliml said. Several had indicated some time ago they did not intend to run again. Other supervisors are concerned about the extra time commitment board members will have to make with the downsizing.
Many people decide to run for County Board and serve one or two terms, Pliml said. Once they get involved, it's difficult to stop. The reduction in the number of supervisors gives supervisors who want to leave a graceful way out.
Three districts currently have definite races in which two incumbents are running for re-election. Another three districts have two incumbents who have both indicated they intend to run for re-election.
Only two districts, districts 12 and 18, both in the Wisconsin Rapids area, have had someone other than an incumbent file paperwork. Any district with three candidates, like District 12, will have a primary election Feb. 19.
Everyone elected in the spring election, April 1, will have to start from the beginning, said Pliml, who will face incumbent John Dove during the spring election. It will be an experience as the County Board learns to work with its smaller size.
